Jack completed his PhD at the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University (2017-2021, supervised by Prof. Robert Taylor and Dr. Monika Oláhová), uncovering new molecular genetic causes of mitochondrial disease and congenital disorders of autophagy. He was awarded the Doctoral Thesis Prize for his work, and during this period also received an EMBO Short-term Fellowship to work at Helsinki University developing models of autophagy deficiency (2019, supervised by Dr. Thomas McWilliams). Jack was then an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University in Montreal (2021-2024, supervised by Prof. Heidi McBride), where he used CRISPR screening to identify new mechanisms of inflammatory cell death. Now in the Horvath Lab, Jack is working to uncover the molecular basis of clinical heterogeneity in mitochondrial disease.
