Mariana is a PhD student at the Horvath Lab. Her project focuses on generating stem cell-derived neuronal models to investigate the mechanisms of cell-type specific vulnerability in hereditary mitochondrial replication and translational defects affecting the nervous system.

Before joining the University of Cambridge, Mariana completed her BA in Neuroscience and Global Health at Northwestern University in 2022. During her undergraduate studies, she researched the role of oxidative stress in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease using patient-derived cellular models at the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
